Unlock Android phone after too many pattern attempts

In the FAQ category: Unlock Android phone that is locked after too many pattern attempts. I've seen the question so many times in the Google Mobile Help Forum that I felt that a post could help someone out.
Pattern lock

The pattern lock screen (in Swedish)

On Android phones you can activate a feature called pattern lock. This feature can be compared to a Windows computer asking for password after the screen saver kicked in, only instead of a password you use a pattern. You get a screen with 9 dots and you draw a pattern of your choice with 4 of them. If you forget your pattern (or have kids that likes to play with phones) you will after 3 faulty attempts be unable to use the pattern to unlock it. Instead you are asked for your Google account and password (that is setup with the phone of course). This is where the problem starts.

For many, many users providing the username and password won’t change a thing. For some people changing the password via a computer has worked but that is uncommon. Most people ends up with a very expensive paperweight. Have no fear, there are solutions to almost everything!

Update

Google has a decent article on how to regain access to your account here:
http://support.google.com/android/bin/answer.py?hl=en&topic=2500700&ctx=topic&answer=2569768
That will still not solve everything but start there and then go through the bullets below.
Some workarounds to try before reading ahead:
1. try entering null as password. (together with your google username)
2. try entering your username without @gmail.com
3. Combine 1 and 2
4. Call yourself from another phone, answer, without hanging up press the home button, then menu button, settings, try to disable pattern-lock
5. Call yourself from another phone, answer, hang-up, directly after hanging up start pressing your buttons like a madman for <30-60 seconds ending with your home button (might take a while to get the timing right). Go into settings and disable pattern-lock.
6.  Try the normal recover password routine from GMail.com and start over from 1.
7. Perform a factory reset. YOU WILL LOOSE all not-synced DATA (SD card will be left untouched).
1-6 are possible workarounds, these doesn't work for everyone but can be worth a try to avoid factory reset. 6. is what should work but hardly never does. 7 - The factory reset always work

End Update

In this case the solution is to make a factory reset (sometimes referred to as hard reset or wipe). This will erase all data on your phone (not on your SD-card). Your contacts and mails should be in sync with the Google servers, no problem there then. Downloaded applications needs to be installed again but there is a list of your previous downloads in the Android Market->My Downloads. Other things though are lost if you haven’t backed them up manually with a 3-rd party application. Example on things you will lose: Call logs, text messages, application settings.

This is your 3 step solution

  1. Factory reset your phone (links to Android device manuals can be found below, it differs between devices)
  2. Setup your phone just like you did the first time you unpacked it (use the same Google Account if you want your old contacts back!)
  3. Restore any manual back-ups and install your previous applications from the My Downloads list.

How do I factory reset? HTC leads the way and put this information in their manuals, other manufacturers should learn from this!

Dear readers, as much as I would love to keep a directory on how to factory reset every single Android device out there, it's just not possible. Use your rights as a customer, go back to the store and ask them to help you factory reset your device!

T-Mobile Pulse
If you want to do a Hard Reset but can't do it through the menu, please use the update from T-Mobile UK website: T-Mobile - Help & Support

But use the file from the "Android updates" section and the following piece:
November 2009: T-Mobile Pulse software

This software update should be used ONLY when your T-Mobile Pulse has been security locked and you do not have a valid password.

  1. If you right-click on your mouse here and select the "Save target as.." option - it should take about 2 minutes to download depending on your internet connection speed.
PLEASE NOTE: Installing this update will remove all existing data on your T-Mobile Pulse.
  2. Then in your pc format the SD card. then copy the folder dload to your new formatted SD card. So the folder with the two files will be on there.
  3. Insert your SD card in the phone
  4. Then when your phone is off, do the following:
Vol + key & "hang up button" - keep them both together pushed and then turn on the phone. Then the update will start automatically. Once the update is finished it might hang to long in the "phone will restart automatically". If so, take out the battery again and turn the phone on normally. then it all will go as normal.
  5. Once the update is done, you will have to configure your phone again, which also means you can choose the language again.

  1. For motorola milestones, there is another thing that work for me:

1 – Shutdown your cell phone
2 – Start your cell phone in safe mode (power + D-Pad), will show a label saying that is in safe mode.
3 – Now log in with you e-mail and password.

Done! This work for me. No phone data lost.
Maybe other cell phones in safe mode can work too…

  2. Thanks, the advice to tipe “null” worked perfectly on my HTC-Tatoo. I wish you a happy New Year!

    • This will work for you

1/ Switch off the phone (either removing the battery or shutting down by holding the “end call” button for few seconds
2/ While being switched off, hold the “home” (house) and “back” (the arrow in the lower right corner)
3/ Hit briefly the “end call” button” while still holding the “home” and “back” buttons.
4/ Release the “home” and “back” button, a white screen containing technical information should appear, with a red message asking for hitting the “menu” button.
5/ Hit the “menu button”, the Hero will now boot with factory settings.

Factory settings means that every information stored on the ROM (NOT your SD memory card) will be cleared

  4. neither login, nor ‘null’ works for me. this is an egregious FAIL on someone’s part. Google? Sprint? Samsung? F all of them

    • If the workarounds fail you will have to perform a factory reset:

To factory reset Galaxy 3 (a.k.a. Apollo or GT-i5800):
      Turn of your device.
Hold [Volume -] and [Home] buttons and power on.

Follow the on screen instructions to perform a format.

  14. I have an acer android (s100). I tried to unlock it using the procedure described with the username and “null” password but did not work. Does anyone know how to unlock the phone without performing a hard reset?

    • Have you tried the calling yourself workaround?
      Two alternatives:
      1. Simply call yourself, answer, without hanging up press home and then menu and see if you get into settings.

      2. Call yourself, answer, hangup and immediately start pushing your hardware buttons like crazy ending with home. The idea is to give the phone so many inputs that the “lock command” get lost on the way.

      • Thank you very much ET/Osky for your recommendations.
I tried the first recommendation and worked as far as i can get back in to the main menu, where i can change the lock pattern or even can make the choice not to require a lock pattern. But by the time i end up the call i return back to the screen where it asks for the username and password to enter the phone.

  15. Just wanted to say thank you! I started panickung there for a minute:) Ur a lifesaver! Thanx a lot once again!!!
    Happy new year:)

  16. i forgot the unlock pattern for my samsung europa galaxy nd i av tried everytin up there includin d factory set nd it still nt workin…….can u plssssssss help meeeee

    • If it didn’t work with a factory reset…well then you didn’t factory reset :)
Samsung Europa Galaxy? Don’t recognize that name at all, from some searching it looks like it could be known as Galaxy 5 (GT-i5500). To get into recovery mode you should:
      1. Turn off your device
      2. Push and hold [Volume up], [Home] and then [Power]
      3. Follow on screen instructions to perform a factory reset.

      Good luck

  17. pleaseeee helppp meee i have the huawei android from metro and its locked and its saying my email is incorrect please help me unlock it

    • Try the workarounds in the post, or perform a factory reset. If you need instructions for the reset you’ll have to post more information on your phone model as I have no clue which one “metro” is.

  18. i have motorola i1 with sprint/nextel my sister tried many pattern attempts and locked my phone… im currently in mexico and have no way to go to a sprint store to get helped… i tried many of the options mentioned above and non of them work,, i dont remember having a google account before and since i got this phone i never created one at all.. so i already created one right now to see if it was going to help but it didnt.. does anybody help meee…! like i mentioned im in mexico and the only way i can communicate with my family is using the DC and with my phone locked i can not talk to no one at all =(

    • Sorry for the late reply, ordinary life taking a lot of time right now.
If the workarounds doesn’t work your only option is to factory reset. I’m afraid that will mean that you’ll loose everything on the phone memory (the SD card will be left untouched).

Factory reset for Motorola i1 copied from the post:
Make sure your device is turned off, pull the battery if needed
Push and hold: “Volume Up” + “Volume Down” + “Call” + “Center button”, press “Power”
Hold until the phone booted into recovery mode then follow the on screen instructions.

      Good luck!

  19. Hi, I use password instead of pattern to lock my HTC desire screen but I forgot my password. Is there any way I can unlock my screen without losing my apps installed on my phone, please?

    • You can try the workarounds listed in the post. If it doesn’t work I hope you’ve selected the “Back up my settings” in “Settings”->”Privacy”. If you have any installed apps will be automatically downloaded even after a factory reset.

  20. OMG CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME I HAD THE PATTERN THING AND MY LIL SIS KEPT PUTTING THE WRONG PATTERN AND IT LOCKED AND ITS ASKING ME TO PUT MY GOOGLE ACCOUNT BUT IT DNT LET ME GO IN WHAT DO I DO????????? PLEASE HELP ME

    • Need more information than that I’m afraid. Try the workarounds above (in the actual post…), and if it doesn’t work post back with information on your phone model as you’ll need to perform a factory reset.

  21. I Have The LG Optimus And My Cousin Locked It ! Iv Tried Everything But It Didn’t Work…. If You Have A Solution It Would Be Much Appreciated :)
    -Thanks

    • If the workarounds listed in the post doesn’t work you will have to perform a factory reset, this will erase Everything on your device (SD card however will be left untouched)!

      1. Turn of your device
      2. Hold [Volume down] and [Home] then [Power]
      3. Keep holding until it start up and then follow the on screen instructions.

      Good luck!

  22. You Are Actually A Life Saver! Thank You<3

  23. I have an acer android (s100). I tried to unlock it using the procedure described with the username and “null” password but did not work.i had call myself and enter into the home,i had change the setting ,even now its asking for Google account while unlocking.pls help me to find out the solution .

    • Use the following procedure and it should work. It worked on my android …

      1. Call yourself from another phone, answer and press the menu button,
      2. Set the wifi to work and make sure the phone has internet connection (check the signal)
      3. Go to settings/security and set off the pattern
      4. Go to settings/sync and log in with your google account and password. If this does not work then try resetting your google account password from your computer and use it. If you need to reset its better to hang up, do the password reset procedure and start over again.
      5. Turn off the phone
      6. Switch it on and unlock it with your google account and password and the tel should now be unlocked.

If the workarounds doesn’t work you will have to perform a factory reset, this will erase Everything on your device!

      1. Turn of your device
      2. Hold [Volume down] and [Home] then [Power]
      3. Keep holding until it start up and then follow the on screen instructions.

      1. Turn of your device

  28. hi i hv a samsung galexy europa and locked the pattern.i haven’t set up google account on phone need help please please

    • If the workarounds listed above doesn’t work you’ll have to perform a factory reset.

To get into recovery mode you should:
      1. Turn off your device
      2. Push and hold [Volume up], [Home] and then [Power]
      3. Follow on screen instructions to perform a factory reset.

Unfortunately that will erase everything from your phone (except the SD card that will be left untouched).

  29. Hi there i had a pattern on my phone and my mate tried it to many times and locked it an i cant remember my usernam and password
could you please help i have the Samsung Galaxy I5503T

    • If the workarounds (including password restore) doesn’t work your last option is a factory reset. Unfortunately that will erase all data from your device.

Looks like it’s the same for I5503T as for Galaxy 5 (GT-i5500). To get into recovery mode you should:
      1. Turn off your device
      2. Push and hold [Volume up], [Home] and then [Power]
      3. Follow on screen instructions to perform a factory reset.

      Good luck

      • I have a locked up Samsung GT I5503T and have tried the work around and the hard reset, sadly neither work. When I attemp the hard reset the phone pauses on the Samsung logo and the model number and goes no further – I have held it for several mins this way. Upon release the phone boots as normal but is still locked. Holding down the centre button on startup puts the phone in ‘Safe Mode’, but this has not helped me either. Are there any other things I can do?

        • Likely there is a way to get into recovery mode but I can’t be sure if the above doesn’t work. If I were you I would take it to the store where you got it and ask them to factory reset it for you.

  30. i just got my samsung galaxy i500 fascionated from my friend of my friend and i could not to opened the unlock paterns and always ask about my google mail of course i dont know about his information and the phone is locked couse to many attempt to it , so please help me couse i paid this phone for couple hundred dollars is really mean to me and i could not use it. thank’s for everything.

    • To perform a factory reset and get the phone back to to “unboxing-state”:

      1. Turn off your device
      2. Push and hold [Volume up], [Home] and then [Power]
      3. Follow on screen instructions to perform a factory reset.

      Good luck

  31. I have an Android phone, Zio M6000. I have been locked out of it all evening. factory reset did not work. I tried the null method and it didnt work either. I even retrieved my google username and and reset a new password for my google account on my home computer. Nothing has worked. PLEASE HELP SO I WONT HAVE A $250 PAPER WEIGHT.

      Hard reset

      1. Power down the phone
      2. Hold down the volume up, end key, trackball and send key simultaneously.
      3. Phone boots. After it vibrates you let go.
To reset Kyocera Zio try the following:

      1. Remove battery and put it back after two minutes
      2. Press and hold down the home button key while turning on the phone.
      3. If by chance the phone starts , do Menu Button > Settings > SD Card USB MASS > Factory Data Reset

If it does not work, try:

      Hard reset 2.

      1. Power off the phone.
      a. Press and hold red END key for 2 seconds >> Phone Options >> select Power Off >> Phone will shut down >> Ok
      a)
      2. Remove battery for 15 seconds & replace battery.
      3. Power up the phone.

      b)
      4. Power off the phone.

      Procedure, cont.

      7. Continue to hold all 4 until keys completely down until the handset vibrates twice then let go of the keys & track ball.
      a. Formatting Data and Cache appears
      1. If you do not see the above (Formatting Data and Cache) redo steps 1 through 7.
      2. If you get a Fast Boot, Self Test or Blue screen redo steps 1 through 7.
      3. Allow the phone to completely reboot. This may take a few moments.
      4. The phone has now been re-set to factory default settings. Please proceed through standard set up and activation procedures.

I then get a scream saying loading appear for about five minutes. The phone then restarts and goes right to the page asking for the google log in. No options or anything.

    • Tricky, I don’t have access to an Apollo to experiment with so I can only suggest you take it to your local dealer and ask them to factory reset it for you.

      Sorry, and best of luck

  39. >>>I have a Samsung Fascinate and I already reset it.. but it still asks for my username and password. Please HElP! …

    • If it asks for username, you didn’t factory reset it. Maybe a soft reset but not a full wipe. A factory reset brings your phone back to “out of the box” state. Instructions above.

    thanks
